Why the number does not get re-issued
The heat number is issued when the alloy is melted and follows the material through forming, machining and heat treatment. Where a process is subcontracted, the number travels with the parts rather than being replaced by the subcontractor’s own reference. That is what makes the certificate traceable to the melt and not just to the last supplier in the chain.
