Testing
Volume inspection, surface inspection, mechanical and chemical — specified before the part is forged, not after.
| Test | Method | What it establishes | Where it appears |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ultrasonic | AMS-STD-2154, class per drawing | Internal soundness | Report |
| Penetrant | ASTM E165 | Surface-breaking defects | Report |
| Magnetic particle | ASTM E709 | Ferromagnetic grades only | Report |
| Tensile | ASTM E8 | Yield, tensile, elongation, reduction | Certificate |
| Hardness | Brinell or Rockwell per grade | Heat treatment response | Certificate |
| Chemical | Melt analysis | Composition against the grade | Certificate |
| Grain size | ASTM E112 | Where the specification calls for it | Report |
UT class has to be named on the enquiry. A part that passes a general UT is not the same as one that meets a specified class, and re-testing after forging changes the schedule.
Third party
EN 10204 3.2 needs a third-party witness booked before the test, not after. Say so at enquiry and the inspection is scheduled into the route.
